The Gerrard Family

The name Gerrard has appeared in many forms on various documents. The most obvious variant is Gerard, but Garrad and Jerratt have also been found. One common mis-transcription of Gerrard is 'Genard' - all of which has made the search for this family more interesting. For simplicity, I shall stick to Gerrard, unless quoting from an original source.

Ann Gerrard (1828 - 1927), [Ann was born on 11th August 1828 and baptised at Burtonwood on 7th September 1828. She married Thomas Knowles (1828-1911) on 22nd January 1854 at Prescot. Their children: Mary Elizabeth (1858-1938), Catherine (1861-1912), Margaret (1864). Ann died on 17th June 1927 (gravestone inscription, S Helens].

Mary Ann Gerrard (1853 - ),

[Born on 25th June 1853, baptised on 24th July 1853 at All Saints, Poplar. She married William Henry Gerrard (1847-1906),on 21st May 1871 at Christ Church, Eccleston. ( William Henry was the illegitimate son of Alice Gerrard, who married Henry Knight in 1847.) Henry Knight was son of William Liptrot, farmer). Their children: Mary Ann (1872), John (1874), William Henry (1875), Richard James (1880), Betsy (1883), Isaac (1886), George (1888), Samuel (1890), Elizabeth (1892), Frederick (1894), Charles (1898).].

Frederick James William Gerrard (1856 - ), {Sometimes called Francis, later just known as William.}

[Born 1856 Poplar, Middlesex. (Registered as Frederick James William). Baptised, (as William) aged 14, on 27th May 1871 at St Nicholas, Sutton. Married Sarah Lockett (1859-) on 25th December 1878 at St Wilfred, Farnworth. Children: William (1881), Sarah (1883), Thomas and John (1886), James (1889), Henry (1892), Albert Edward (1896) and May (1899). Frederick died in 1928 (unconfirmed).].

John Thomas Gerrard (1874 - 1957),

[Remained single. Joined the Life Guards in 1894 (service number 1926). In the 1911 and 1939 censuses he is found in Ladywood, Birmingham, boarding with Hannah Evans and family at 25 Barker Street. John Thomas died on 19th July 1957 at 25 Barker Street, Ladywood.

I know nothing about John Gerrard yet, other than a mention as Samuel's father on his second marriage certificate, in 1841.

Samuel's first marriage was to Elizabeth Fazakerly, widow, on 25th January 1819, at Farnworth.
(Elizabeth's maiden name was Stubbs, and she was living in Windle at the time of her first marriage, in 1811, to Edward Fazakerley, watchmaker, of Sutton. Edward died in 1816, leaving Elizabeth with two children, John (1812) and Sarah (1814)).

Samuel Gerrard married Margaret Tarbuck on 21st November 1841 in the Parish Church, Prescot. Both were of full age. Samuel was a widower from Windle and Margaret a spinster from ?Parr?.
Samuel's father was John Gerrard, labourer.
Margaret's father was Thomas Tarbuck, labourer.
Witnesses were Francis? Howard? (looks more like Doward), and Thomas Jones.

Samuel is later described as a brewer on the marriage certificate of his son, William, in 1842.

She appears on the 1871 census as a servant, at the home of Livewell Broadhead, a shoemaker, at 1, Church Street, Windle. She is probably the Elizabeth who witnessed John Thomas Gerrard's marriage in 1869.

A FATAL STUMBLE

Mt. F. A. Jones, deputy coroner, held an inquest on Friday aftenoon at the Griffin Hotel, Peasley Cross, into the circumstances of the death of Mary Gerard, aged 83, who lived at 2, Manor-street, and who died on the 19th inst. from a broken thigh.

Mrs Ann Gerard, of 21, Waterdale Crescent, daughter -in-law of deceased, steted that the latter was a widow whe lodged with Mrs Ann Greenall, at 2, Manor-steet. She had always had very good health, but in March met with an accident which led to her removal to the St. Helens hospital. While in the hospital she told witness that she slipped, but did not know what caused it unless she went a litlle faint.

Mrs Ann Greenall, wife of Joseph Greenall of 2, Manor-street,said deceased had lodged with her for three years. On Monday 24th March, she fell down in the kitchen and screamed. She was lifted to a sofa and Dr Bates was sent for. He found she was sufferong from a broken thigh and by his direction the old woman was removed to the hospital, where she died. There was a broken tile in the floor at the spot where the deceased fell and the latter told witness she caught her foot on the tile.

The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental Death".
