Religion:
However, James and Elizabeth must have been swayed by the Primitive Methodist Movement, which was stirring at that time. Their first daughter, Mary, was "... christened at the bonded warehouse, off Mount Street, behind the Kings Arms Hotel, then occupied by the Primitive Methodists as a meeting place..." [Quoted from a newspaper report on the occasion of Mary's diamond wedding anniversary in 1929, (Fleetwood Chronicle).]
Perhaps James and Elizabeth had second thoughts, because their third daughter, Elizabeth Ann, was baptised in 1859 into the Church of England at St Peter, Fleetwood.

Children of James and Elizabeth after 1871:
1881 census:

However, I have eventually found them in the Scottish census for Ayr, visiting the Struthers family, in Meuse Lane:

Mary Struthers, daughter, age 16, Dressmaker, born Ayr, Scotland.

Matthew Wilson, visitor, age 4, born "Blithwood, Lanarkshire*."
Henry Wilson, visitor, age 2, born "Blithwood, Lanarkshire*."
*These places were taken from a transcript. They should read "North Meols, Lancashire" and Fleetwood, Lancashire". The enumerator, or their hosts, probably mis-understood their English accent.
I have finally discovered a connection with James Wilson and the port of Ayr in 1881.
James's two sons Peter Wilson (1861) and James Wilson (1869) were crew on the trawler Hannah Eliza, which was in Ayr harbour on the night of the 1881 census, having been badly damaged in a collision with another trawler off the Ayr coast some two months earlier. I can only speculate about the reason Peter and James's parents and two brothers would make the journey north under these circumstances: emotional, financial, legal?
1881 Ayr Harbour
Peter Wilson, age 19, fisherman England.
James Wilson, age 12, cook, England.
From the Ayr Advertiser, or West Country Journal, Thursday 27th January 1881:
Collision at Sea - Seaman Drowned
On Wednesday morning about three o'clock a collision occurred in the bay between the trawlers Champion and Hannah Eliza, both of Fleetwood, and which are at present prosecuting their avocation along the Ayrshire coast, the former vessel running into and carrying away a large portion of the stern of the latter. One of the crew of the Hannah Eliza, a lad of 18, named McCoy, a native of Ireland, evidently suspecting his vessel was sinking, endeavoured to spring on board the Champion, but missing his footing, he fell in the water and was drowned. The Champion stood by the damaged vessel until Ayr was reached.

St Michaels Church, Garston:
married
Alice Whiteside, age 59, widow, of 39 Brunswick Street, Garston, daughter of James Wilson (deceased), fisherman.
Witnesses: John Taylor and Elizabeth Ann Olsson.
She was the daughter of Batley Lodge (1834-1905) and Sarah Eastwood.
John was widowed in 1913 and moved to Garston where, presumably, he came across the recently widowed Alice Whiteside. As a shuttlemaker, he would have been drawn by the thriving Wilson Brothers Bobbin Co.

Between 1920 and 1930, Alice and John Crossley are found in the electoral register for 39 Brunswick Street, Garston.
John died in the first quarter of 1931 and it seems that Alice finally moved back to live in Fleetwood, where she died a few months later.
